Leading international figures will address a conference to promote the treaty that bans all nuclear explosions.
Foreign Ministers of the State Signatories of the CTBT will attend the Fifth Ministerial Meeting to promote the early entry-into-force of the Treaty on Thursday, 23 September 2010 at 14:15 at the United Nations Headquarters, Conference Room 2 in the Temporary North Lawn Building, in New York, United States. The CTBT bans all nuclear explosions. Although already signed by 182 countries and ratified by 153, the Treaty can only enter into force once it is signed and ratified by 44 ‘Annex 2’ States. Nine have yet to do so: China, Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), Egypt, India, Indonesia, Iran, Israel, Pakistan and the United States. In order to raise political momentum for the early entry into force of the CTBT, the Ministers will issue a Joint Ministerial Statement.
All the UN accredited journalists are invited to a press stake-out at the UN Security Council at 14:45 where Kevin Rudd, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Australia, the Chairperson of the Meeting, will make a briefing on the Meeting, together with Ban Ki-moon, UN Secretary- General .
