Video: Against all obstacles - Niger radionuclide station certified
Description
Djibo Maiga of Niger’s High Commission for Atomic Energy tells the backstory of working around enormous obstacles so that his country can fully participate in the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty’s global alarm system to detect nuclear tests. Due to civil unrest in the north of the country, French contractors were not permitted to travel to install CTBT radionuclide station “RN48” located in Agadez. So Djibo and a small team went to France for training with the equipment manufacturer so they could install the station themselves. The work was finished in 2019 and the station is now certified. Its data can help to warn the world of any nuclear test as part of the CTBT’s international monitoring network.
