Technical Meeting on Legacy Data from Nuclear Tests

OBJECTIVES
Finding methods to recover and digitize recordings from historical nuclear tests conducted during 1950’s – 1980’s is critical for preserving these valuable records.  Making these recordings accessible in digital format offers opportunities for a new generation of researchers to study what signatures are encoded in the data.  In this workshop, researchers will discuss ongoing efforts to preserve recordings and metadata from historical nuclear tests and discuss how these data can be used to improve nuclear explosion monitoring.    

Participants are invited to contribute to the technical meeting by making a 30-minute presentation related to one of the following themes:  

• Theme 1: How to do Recovery and Digitization of historical records of nuclear tests? 
• Theme 2: What data inventories are currently available? Where should a legacy data repository reside?   
• Theme 3: What can the historic records teach us?  What insights do new methods (e.g., machine learning) give us from looking at old data?

PARTICIPANT PROFILE

• Experts involved in recovery of historical geophysics or radionuclide recordings.
• Experts in analysis of seismic data for nuclear explosion monitoring. 

APPLICATION  AND REGISTRATION PROCEDURES

All applicants are requested to visit ctnw.ctbto.org, and apply online latest by 28 June 2024

States Signatories wishing to nominate experts are requested to inform the Provisional Technical Secretariat (PTS) (see Point of Contact) through their respective Permanent Mission. 

States Signatories are encouraged to nominate qualified female candidates.

Financial support may be available to a limited number of participants. Such assistance must be requested at the time of registration (by selecting the relevant box during online registration) and no later than 28 June 2024. Financial support will be considered only for those who have either submitted an accepted abstract or submitted a paragraph outlining their ideas for using legacy data from nuclear tests. 

For applicants not requesting financial support submitting an abstract is optional, but encouraged. All applicants should specify the type of presentation (oral, poster).

No registration fee will be charged.


FINANCIAL INFORMATION
Applicable to PTS-funded participants only

In accordance with the Staff regulations and rules and Administrative Directives, the PTS will provide the following:

• A Daily Subsistence Allowance (DSA) that is sufficient to cover the related expenses during the technical meeting;
• The PTS travel agent will reserve, issue and forward the flight ticket to the participants for the most direct and economic route;
• Funded participants are not allowed to purchase their own tickets unless, under exceptional circumstances, they are authorized to do so in advance and only if this proves to be most cost effective option for the PTS;
• The PTS will book a hotel and cover the costs for the accommodation and technical meeting participants will receive their remaining Daily Subsistence Allowance upon arrival in Vienna; and
• Health insurance will be provided that covers the duration of the technical meeting.

Requirement: Scanned passport copies.


OTHER PERTINENT INFORMATION

Visas
Participants should apply for visas, if needed, at the corresponding Embassy/Consular Office upon receipt of an Acceptance Note Verbale from the PTS in order to ensure timely processing.  The PTS will provide personal invitations to visa applicants.
